Some of my favorite authors, however, I consider to be much lesser writers than Shakespeare and Cervantes.
Mervyn Peake, J.L. Borges, Doris Lessing, Jack Kerouac, Richard Brautigan.
Brautigan is far inferior to Shakespeare, but I'd hate to have to choose between Hamlet and Trout Fishing in America.
The most "literary" favorite I can think of is John Gardner.
